An Unusual Tool for Managing Plenty

When the supply of food, entertainment, and experiences is infinite, how do we manage our impulses and our experience of “satisfaction?”

One of the most profound and useful concepts I learned in business school has been very helpful to me in creating joy from experiencing everyday life, and I think it will help you, too, so I am sharing it here. Continue reading “An Unusual Tool for Managing Plenty”

Hard Times

New choices about how we experience hard times

Tonight I am thinking of a friend who is beset by a cocktail of challenging planetary energies that are manifesting in life-defining pressures. His struggle reminds me of some of mine and how I have learned how to dance with these energies more gracefully over the years. Here I will share some of my learnings that I am still learning. Read on for how you can transform your experience with “bad times,” “the blues,” “deep shit”; they have many aliases. Continue reading “Hard Times”

On Physicality and Aging

Goals are about destinations, not journeys.

Today I am reflecting on my motivation for “working out” and being active, and I suspect that these reflections may help you rethink how you relate to your body as they have me, so here we go.

Here’s some context: since entering “middle age” several years ago, I have had many conversations and other interactions having to do with people’s motivations and attitudes toward their bodies, and many of these emerged during ethnographic research engagements in which I studied people online. Most of the stereotypes and ideas I encountered are not useful to me because they miss the whole point of what the body is, what its significance is. So let’s follow this and see where it leads. Watching People Walk

Have you ever had an experience that you could have never predicted, but when you had it, it was so obvious that it was impossible to ignore? Today I will share one of my most surprising life hacks, one that is mind-blowing in simplicity but profound in its implications.

Since I wear Five Fingers everywhere, which includes conservative business settings, I constantly have people asking me about them. “Are they comfortable? I know someone who had a pair…” I have had hundreds of these conversations since 2011, and I find it virtually impossible to communicate how transformational walking (virtually) barefoot is. It’s an immense life hack that’s hidden in plain view, so I’ll try to correct that here.

Since we’re talking about walking, let me take you on a short wander… Continue reading “Watching People Walk”

Ego and Sex

Over the last week, I have realized something astounding that I want to share tonight, a surprising side effect of Ego’s having agreed to sit in the back seat of the car while Spirit drives. In short, I have become aware of sex at a completely new level. As much as I love touching my lover physically, emotionally and spiritually, I have realized how limiting sex is, that it imposes a huge cost on relationships, and when it is absent, relationships can accelerate.

If I were reading this, I would think the writer was completely bats, and my mind would imagine how many ways he could be weird or crazy or repressed or… That said, I invite you to join me on this short exploration: it might enable you to transform some of your relationships in surprising ways. Arnica, A Huge Healing Health Hack

I was pedaling back from a meeting in the neighborhood today in heavy snow, the kind with luscious large fluffy flakes. It was really coming down, so I took residential streets and went slowly. However, about a mile from home, I happened on one of those famous Chicago road deformations—it was upon me before I knew it due to its white blanket camouflage—a large dip and curl in the pavement that was slick under the snow, and I went down on my left knee and ankle. There wasn’t a car in sight, so I got up, examined myself and found my knee sore but okay, my bike okay, so I pedaled home. Continue reading “Arnica, A Huge Healing Health Hack”

A Simple Way to Transform Your Relationships

I think of my and others’ earthly identities as “clothes” for their spirits, vehicles for navigating their lives on Earth. Spirits are incarnate in their bodies, and here I’ll show how this point of view enables me to interact with people more fully. Then I’ll share suggestions for how you can try this, too. Reframing the “Good” and “Bad” of Daily Life

This Spirit/Body series on living earthly and spirit channels while incarnated has been pretty abstract thus far, and today I’m pleased to get down to some day-to-day practicality! You may appreciate this post more if you check out its progenitors, The Body as Avatar and On Being Incarnate. The big idea in this series is that one can live more fully by experiencing one’s incarnated life on two levels, the body and the spirit. I am learning how to do this, and I’m sharing my insights in case they give you some ideas to create your life with more purpose. Continue reading “Reframing the “Good” and “Bad” of Daily Life”
